The Birth of the Hollywood Sign
The Hollywood sign originated in 1923, not as an emblem of the entertainment industry, but as a real estate advertisement. It originally read “Hollywoodland” and was intended to promote a new housing development spearheaded by Harry Chandler, a Los Angeles Times publisher and real estate mogul.

Jeff Zarrinman launched a campaign to raise $250,000 for a full rebuild. His efforts attracted support from Hollywood’s elite, with celebrities like Hugh Hefner and Alice Cooper stepping in to sponsor individual letters. Hefner famously funded the “Y,” while Cooper backed the “O,” solidifying their names in the sign’s storied history.
