Smart Storage Solutions: How to Make the Most of the Cupboards Above Your Fridge

If You Have Cupboards Above Your Fridge, Here’s How to Use Them

A well-organized home brings a sense of calm, with everything in its proper place. For many, myself included, it’s difficult to concentrate when things are out of order or when items aren’t stored where they should be.

But I wasn’t always this way. Growing up, I didn’t prioritize household organization. Fortunately, my mother did, and she made sure our home always looked immaculate, like it was ready for a real estate photo shoot. She passed on a lot of her wisdom to me, including some great tips on how to use those often-overlooked cupboards found above many refrigerators. If you have these cupboards too, read on to discover how they can be put to good use.

At first glance, these small, high-up cupboards might seem a bit impractical. They’re often too small for large items, and storing everyday dishes or cups up there isn’t convenient. So, what exactly should you do with them?

If you’re unsure, here are some clever ideas to make those cupboards work for you:

1. Storage for Infrequently Used Kitchen Gadgets

These cupboards might not be ideal for daily items, but they’re perfect for kitchen gadgets that you only use occasionally. Think about your food processor, blender, waffle maker, or other appliances that don’t see the light of day too often. Storing them up high keeps them out of the way but still within reach when you need them.

2. Canned Goods and Baking Supplies

Canned goods have long shelf lives, so it’s perfectly fine to store them in a place that’s a bit out of sight. Similarly, baking supplies that you might only pull out on weekends can find a home in these cupboards. This way, they’re stored neatly without taking up precious space elsewhere in your kitchen.

3. Cookbooks

If you have a collection of cookbooks that you don’t want cluttering your countertops, consider storing them above the fridge. It’s a great way to keep them accessible without them getting in the way.

4. Pantry Items and Spices

Just like canned goods, some pantry items can be stored in these high cupboards. You might even consider using a small spice rack to keep your cooking spices organized and out of the way.

5. Kitchen Towels

If you tend to buy kitchen towels in bulk—like my wife does—these cupboards can be the perfect spot to store them. They’re easy to reach when needed but stay tucked away neatly.

6. Fine China

Do you have fine china or special cutlery that you only bring out for holidays or special occasions? Storing them above the fridge keeps them safe and out of the reach of children, reducing the risk of accidents.

A Word of Caution

While these cupboards can be incredibly useful, it’s important to be cautious when using them. Always ensure that items stored there aren’t too heavy, and use a sturdy stool or step ladder to access them. Also, be aware that the heat from the fridge can affect some items, so it’s best to avoid storing anything that could be damaged by warmth.
