Vegan Woman Takes Neighbors to Court Over Barbecuing Meat in Their Backyard
Cilla Carden’s experience with her neighbors has been nothing short of a nightmare. The massage therapist from Perth, Australia, found her neighbors’ activities so disruptive that she took them to the Supreme Court.
Carden’s grievances revolved around her neighbors’ frequent barbecues and basketball games, which she claimed made it impossible for her to enjoy her own backyard. “It’s been devastating, it’s been turmoil, it’s been unrest, I haven’t been able to sleep,” Carden shared with 9News in 2019.
For several months, Carden, a committed vegan, had been troubled by the smell of her neighbors’ barbecue and cigarette smoke. Additionally, she was disturbed by the noise of children playing basketball. “They’ve put it there so I smell fish, all I can smell is fish. I can’t enjoy my backyard, I can’t go out there,” she explained.
The situation escalated to the point where Carden decided to take legal action. Her initial claims were rejected, and her subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court was also denied. “It’s deliberate, that’s what I told the courts, it’s deliberate,” Carden stated.
In response, her neighbors believed they had resolved the issue. According to a report by 9News, they removed the barbecue and asked their children to stop playing basketball.
The case gained widespread attention, and in response, a Facebook event was organized for a community barbecue to assert that Carden couldn’t “destroy a good old Aussie tradition.” The event saw 24,000 people showing interest, prompting police to issue a warning and Carden’s lawyer to threaten legal action. Consequently, the barbecue was canceled.
Despite public perception, Carden’s lawyer clarified that she has “no objection to people eating meat and no objection to people having barbecues.”
